Kanha – one of India’s most famous wildlife reserves
Kanha National Park lies in the Mandla and Balaghat districts of Madhya Pradesh. Spread over about 940 sq. km, it is renowned for its biodiversity and is the inspiration behind Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book.
The park is home to the Royal Bengal Tiger, barasingha (swamp deer), leopards, wild dogs, sloth bears and over 300 species of birds. Meadows, dense sal and bamboo forests and clear streams make it a paradise for nature lovers and photographers. Open-jeep safaris offer thrilling chances to spot wildlife.
Distance & travel time
Jabalpur to Kanha National Park is roughly 165–170 km depending on the entry gate – about 4 to 5 hours by road.
Best time to visit
- October to June. Winter (Oct–Feb) has pleasant weather; summer (Mar–Jun) gives higher chances of tiger sightings near water.
- Avoid July–September – monsoon rains close many safari routes and make spotting difficult.
